Workforce Shortages in Israeli Water Technology
Israel's water technology sector reports a 2023 vacancy rate of 28% for membrane engineers and desalination process technicians, according to the Israel Water Authority workforce survey. This gap limits the scale of applied R&D projects that can be executed without external hiring delays.
Startups concentrated in the Tel Aviv and Beersheba clusters compete for the same limited pool of graduates from the Technion and Ben-Gurion University desalination programs. Research proposals must therefore include explicit budget lines for industry secondments rather than assuming academic personnel can absorb all technical roles.
Infrastructure Concentration in Israel
Desalination pilot facilities are clustered along the Mediterranean coast, with Sorek and Hadera plants offering the only large-scale test beds for new pretreatment chemistries. Inland wastewater reuse projects in the Jordan Valley lack comparable infrastructure, requiring additional transport of test water or mobile skid units.
Grant funding for model development can be directed toward integrating real-time SCADA data from the national water carrier with startup sensor prototypes. This integration step demands cooperation with Mekorot, Israel's national water utility, whose data-sharing protocols differ from those of municipal utilities elsewhere in the region.
